Academic Job Openings

The academic pillar of Deep Springs is deliberately dynamic. Its three long-term Chairs have three-year terms renewable up to a maximum of six years. There are many openings for semester-long and other short-term faculty every academic year.

Visiting Professors

The application window for Academic Year 2027-2028 Visiting Faculty positions is now open.

Scholars from across the Natural Sciences, Humanities, Social Sciences, STEM fields (click here for lab facilities), and the Arts are welcome to apply as Visiting Professors. Visiting Professors at Deep Springs have a unique impact on the intellectual culture of the school; a specific interest in how pedagogy may inform a life of leadership and service would be invaluable in this role. Visiting professors are expected to engage with the community beyond the classroom by fostering rapport with students and colleagues; opportunities include sharing in meals, projects, recreation, research, and ongoing conversation.

Visiting professor positions at Deep Springs pay $10,000 per semester or $5,000 for the seven-week summer term, and include on-campus housing and meals. In addition, the College will reimburse moving expenses up to $1,000. Deep Springs prizes its remarkably high teacher/student ratio: visiting professors typically teach one seminar-style course with an enrollment cap of ten students.

Appointments for Scholars on Sabbatical Leave

Deep Springs may make a limited number of short-term and summer appointments one to several years in advance, in order to accommodate applications from scholars planning sabbatical leaves from other institutions. Applications for the 2027-2028 academic year and beyond may be submitted at any time.

Long-Term Chairs

The College’s three long-term Chairs are the Herbert Reich Chair of Natural Science, the Robert Aird Chair of Humanities, and the Julian Steward Chair of Social Sciences. As noted above, long-term chairs have three-year terms renewable up to a maximum of six years. Deep Springs does not offer tenure.

Note on Non-U.S. Applicants

Deep Springs does not sponsor J-1 Exchange Visitor visas; all applicants for employment must already be legally qualified to work in the U.S. as a condition of employment. We are sorry about this, but given our small size we cannot absorb the considerable administrative burden required to support the exchange visitor program.
