During the recent mini-reunion of 1950s & 1960s alumni over Memorial Day weekend, Jan Vleck DS’69 ran the second-ever Deep Springs Valley marathon. Jan first pioneered the event in 2008, using a course he plotted that goes (roughly) from the Main Building to Highway 168, heads north towards the mouth of Wyman Canyon, back east to Hwy 168, south on the highway to Elephant Hill, cross-country on jeep trails to Deep Springs Lake, then back up the lake road to campus with a couple laps of the Main Circle for good measure. In this year’s race (which he ran in the opposite direction), Jan set a personal best on the mile-high course of 3:52:11 – shaving nearly 40 minutes off his 2008 pace. Jan encourages/invites other alumni to take a turn at the course next time they visit for a reunion. You can set a course record in your own age category!
During the reunion, we learned of the July 2010 death of devoted civil libertarian and ACLU of Ohio board member David Shevin, DS’69. More information about David’s life is available here: David Shevin Tribute
