Journalist Nathan Deuel DS’97 brings us word that his book Friday Was the Bomb will be published by Dzanc Books on May 13. Nathan recently settled in Los Angeles with his wife, NPR correspondent Kelly McEvers, and their young daughter. He is a former editor for Rolling Stone and The Village Voice. In 2008 he moved with Kelly to Saudi Arabia where she was working as a foreign correspondent. There they had a daughter, and later, while she filed reports from Baghdad and Syria, car bombs erupted and one night a firefight raged outside the family’s apartment in Beirut. They struggled with the decision to stay or go home. At once a meditation on fatherhood, an unusual memoir of a war correspondent’s spouse, and a first-hand account from the front lines of the most historic events of recent day–the Arab Spring, the end of the Iraq war, and the unrest in Syria–Nathan’s volume is a collection of timely and absorbing essays. Dzanc Books was founded in 2006 and is based in Michigan.
