Sam Laney – Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute

Sam Laney DS’87, Associate Scientist in Biology at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, recently spent several weeks sailing the Bering Sea with a team of scientists as they took the R/V Sikuliaq on a trial run through the Arctic conducting a variety of oceanographic research projects. The Sikuliaq is the newest addition to the U.S. oceanographic fleet and is specifically capable of bringing scientists into difficult polar sea ice conditions. No stranger to life at sea, Sam travelled on the vessel for 23 days. You can read Sam’s personal reflections at his blog about the research trip and learn the joys (and challenges) of seaborne scientific work. When not living like a sailor, Sam continues his research and teaching at WHOI in Massachusetts.
