Tom Holloway, Writer-In-Residence

Deep Springs recently enjoyed the much-appreciated two-week tenure of Tom Holloway as Writer-In-Residence. Tom is Professor of History at The University of California at Davis, and is the son of Merritt Holloway, former Ranch Manager of Deep Springs College. During his two weeks here Tom worked on a book project entitled Apulco de Castro: The Conflicted Life and Forgotten Death of an Afro-Brazilian Journalist, 1883. Tom also gave an address to the community about his work on Latin American history, and took advantage of his stay to get in a solo horseback ride up Wyman Canyon to Robert’s Ranch and back in a sometimes-blinding snow storm—just for old times’ sake. He regaled the community with stories about his childhood on the ranch, and showed off some vintage photographs of the old Deep Springs.

Thanksgiving Festivities

This week, friends and family members of the Deep Springs community will visit the valley to celebrate Thanksgiving with a delicious meal overseen by TurkeyCom (the turkey committee). Following the festivities, the aptly named Turkey Bowl will pit students of the East against students of the West in a football showdown, proving that at Deep Springs, there is no middle ground. An evening of music will follow.

October 27 Bay Area Event Cancelled

A message from Louis Fantasia, President, Deep Springs College:

It is with great regret that I am writing to inform you that Fred Baldeston, 'DS40, passed away on Thursday, October 18.  After discussing the matter with Fred's wife Elizabeth and their son Tom, we have decided that the most appropriate action at this time is to cancel the reception that had been scheduled in his honor for Saturday, October 27. There will be a memorial reception for Fred at some point in the future at the Berkeley Faculty Club; we will keep the alumni community informed about the event as we get more information.

The entire Deep Springs community extends its sympathies to Fred’s family.

Fred Balderston (DS40) and Dave Wergedar (DS 47)
Honored With The Deep Springs Medal

Fred Balderston was a long-time friend and supporter of Deep Springs College, whose life exemplified the school's commitment to "a life of service." Serving on the faculty of the Haas School of Business, University of California since 1953, his interests included strategic planning and management, financial management and regulation, and strategic management of higher education institutions. In addition to his appointment on the Haas faculty, Fred served as Executive Director of the Bernard Osher Foundation; Associate Dean, Haas School of Business, UC Berkeley; Vice President, Planning and Analysis, University of California (systemwide; including design and construction of Cowell Hospital); and Chairman, California State Committee on Public Education.  He was the author of numerous books, publications and articles.

Since 1964, Dr. Dave Werdegar held numerous positions at UCSF, including Professor and Chair of the Department of Family and Community Medicine as well as Associate Dean for the medical school's academic programs at San Francisco General Hospital. In the mid-80s, Mayor Dianne Feinstein appointed Dr. Werdegar Director of the San Francisco Health Department. As Director from 1985 to 1990, he led a unified community response to the rising AIDS epidemic, supported the expansion of community-oriented primary care services, and established innovative programs for drug abuse treatment and care of the mentally ill. Five years later he was appointed by Governor Pete Wilson to Director of the Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development addressing health policy, rural health care, and loan insurance for non-profit health facilities. Dr. Werdegar also served 10 years as a trustee of the Marin Community Foundation (Buck Trust) developing the Foundation's leadership structure, funding priorities, and community outreach. He currently serves as Chair of the Arbitration Oversight Board for the Kaiser Health Plan.
